Some Uses and Protocols For doTerra Oils


Oils, blends & products recommended:

Suggested protocols:

Tamalu – The following information began with Nicole Stevens, MS.  The original research was her dissertation on therapeutic-grade essential oils and their response in the body to cancer.

We know that chemotherapy is highly toxic and kills healthy cells along with the cancerous cells.  According to the research done by Nicole Stevens, MS, it is not unusual for cancer therapies to kill a large percentage of good cells along with the bad.  This is why we see the signs of hair loss, yellow eyes, grayed hair, nausea, fatigue, etc, from patients on chemotherapy.  According to the research, in a cell count of 100, anything under a healthy cell death rate of 25 is phenomenal. With therapeutic-grade essential oils the cell death count is less than 25 cells.  Nicole Stevens tested repeatedly and has not yet found a toxicity level, even at extremely high concentrations of essential oils.

Dr. Jaime Matta (Ponce School of Medicine, Ponce, Puerto Rico) found Frankincense to be very effective against even chemotherapy-resistant strains of breast cancer.  The National Institute of Health research shows effectiveness against bladder cancer. Google “Frankincense” and “cancer” and as of today you will find 42 papers published.  Watch for more publications of this research.

There are also other oils which are found to be anti-tumoral; some of them also encourage the re-growth of healthy cells.  Among them are Sandalwood, Thyme, Lavender, and Clove.  Understanding the costliness of pure Frankincense and Sandalwood oils it is exciting to learn that other, less expensive oils may be combined with Frankincense and Sandalwood and actually increase the effectiveness of a cancer treatment.  Combined with dōTERRA’s Lifelong Wellness Trio, (these are) powerful tools for healing!

NOTE: Frankincense and Sandalwood both require much time and care to distill while retaining the proper therapeutic constituents.  For this reason the doTerra products are relatively expensive.  On the other hand, be careful because other sources commonly extract using solvents or shortened distillation to save cost but loose the proper blend of constituents for maximum effectiveness.

This protocol is beginning to be used on a larger scale, by doctors in private practice and in US hospitals at this time.  I was taught to combine it with the Spinal Technique (similar to AromaTouch Technique), daily if possible, and lots of good water to drink.

1)   One 00 capsule Frankincense, One 00 capsule Sandalwood, One 00 capsule Lavender morning and evening for 3 days.  Frankincense, Sandalwood and Lavender topically morning and evening for those same 3 days.

2)   One 00 capsule Frankincense, One 00 capsule Sandalwood, One 00 capsule Wild Orange morning and evening for 3 days.  Frankincense, Sandalwood and Wild Orange topically morning and evening for those same 3 days.

3)   One 00 capsule Frankincense, One 00 capsule Sandalwood, One 00 capsule Lemon… (Repeat process)

4)   One 00 capsule Frankincense, One 00 capsule Sandalwood, One 00 capsule Thyme… (Repeat process)

5)   One 00 capsule Frankincense, One 00 capsule Sandalwood, One 00 capsule Clove… (Repeat process)

The oils may be rotated as often as necessary.

I am not a doctor, but I do work with doctors whom I trust, and this is what they would do for their family.  I have shared this protocol with family members and friends with tremendous success when the need has arisen.

Spinal Technique (AromaTouch Technique): Balance and Lavender for stress management; Melaleuca and On Guard for immune support; AromaTouch and Deep Blue for inflammatory response; Wild Orange and Peppermint for homeostasis (balancing). Go to the page on AromaTouch Technique for more information.

Pain Formulas

  • White Fir and Frankincense applied topically.
  • In a capsule for internal consumption:

*  12 drops Wintergreen

*  8 drops vetiver

*  8 drops Helichrysum

  • For nerve-type pain, equal parts vetiver, Peppermint, and Deep Blue topically and internally in a 00 capsule.

Some may work better for you than others.  The secret with any treatment is finding what works best for your biochemically unique system.

Fungus Itch

Oils, blends & products recommended:

Oils & Blends:  Clear Skin, Geranium, Lavender, Melaleuca, On Guard, Thyme

Essential oils based products:

Also consider: Myrrh, Peppermint

Suggested protocols:

The most common oils mentioned for these types of fungal infections are Melaleuca, Oregano, Thyme, and the blend ClearSkin to address the infection itself.  Concurrently, applying Lavender soothes and helps relieve itching.  Finally, Geranium is an excellent oil for skin disorders and healing.

A protocol suggested is to make the following blend and apply topically.  Mixing up a 10 day supply initially would be wise.  The amount typical for one application would be:

  • 1 drop Lavender
  • 1 drop Melaleuca
  • 1 drop Thyme
  • Therefore, 30 drops of each blended together would provide the 10 day protocol.

Apply 2-3 drops of this blend topically on the area of infection 3 times a day for 10 days.  Follow this with Melaleuca (may be mixed 3:1 with a carrier oil) for 30 days to assure the fungus does not return.

If you are treating someone else it is a good idea to cleanse with Melaleuca or On Guard after treatment so the fungus is not spread.


Skin Problems

Age Spots (liver spots):

  • Cleanse the liver using Zendocrine cleanse as recommended.  Other cleanses are described on another page, click here.
  • Equal parts Frankincense, Lavender, and Myrrh with Extra Virgin Coconut Oil applied topically daily.

Bags Under Eyes (Dark Circles)

  • Be aware there are different root causes for the puffy or darkness under your eyes.  Look for the root cause such as water retention, lack of sleep, not enough exercise and deal with it directly.
  • Cypress oils is a powerful astringent and Frankincense, Geranium, Myrrh, and Sandalwood have helped some.  Any of these oils with virgin coconut oil at night and neat in the mornings.
  • The doTerra skin products Anti-Aging Moisturizer and Tightening Serum both have many of these oils pre-formulated to improve the tone and appearance of your skin.

Chapped Skin (dry skin):

  • Consider the root cause.  If it is dietary regain balanced nutrition by using the Life Long Vitality supplements.
  • Apply topically to the areas Myrrh essential oil (undiluted) and/or make a lotion of Virgin Coconut Oil with 2-5% Myrrh essential oil (One ounce of carrier with 12 to 30 drops of Myrrh.)

Dry cracked heels (heel fissures):

  • Apply 2 -3 drops of Peppermint topically on the area in the morning and in the evening more Peppermint with VCO and cover with socks. Be consistent and patient.
  • Also consider the following lotion applied every morning and night.
  • 10 drops Geranium
  • 10 drops Melaleuca
  • 10 drops Peppermint
  • blended with 1 tablespoon of Extra Virgin Coconut Oils

Flabby Skin:

  • Massage the local area with the following blend.
  • 2 ounces carrier oil, 1 ounce wheat germ oil, 36-72 drops Lavender (2-4% Lavender)

Itchy Skin (some suggest this can be nutritionally connected):

  • Limit to a vegan diet and complement with green smoothies.
  • Cleanse using GX Assist and PB Assist cleanse as recommended.  Other cleanses are described on another page, click here.
  • Apply Frankincense or On Guard to more severe spots.
  • Use the AromaTouch Technique daily or at a minimum weekly for relaxation.


  • Apply 1 drop of Frankincense topically directly to the mole.
  • Caution: If mole is changing in shape, size, or color rapidly seek a professional opinion on the type of mole it is and what procedures should be followed.

Oily Skin:

  • DoTerra makes a skin cleanser (doTerra Facial Cleanser) with Melaleuca and Peppermint essential oils that freshens the skin.
  • Similar cleanser can be made using coconut oil with 2-5% Lemon essential oil.  One ounce of carrier with 12 to 30 drops of Lemon.

Skin Tags (can be from skin to skin rubbing, some are viral):

  • Cleanse using GX Assist and PB Assist cleanse as recommended.  Other cleanses are described on another page, click here.
  • Apply Frankincense 2 or 3 times daily till gone. Also Clear Skin blend is effective.

Stretch Marks:

  • DoTerra makes a moisturizing skin lotion (doTerra Anti-Aging Moisturizer) with Lavender, jasmine, Geranium, and Frankincense essential oils that is prepared and ready to go.
  • To prepare your own lotion consider: Virgin Coconut Oil as a carrier, add Lavender, Frankincense, Geranium, and Helichrysum.  Start with 2% of each oil, that is 12 drops of oil for each ounce of carrier.

Sun Spots:

  • Those caused by fungus (tinea versicolor) use topical application of ClearSkin blend or other antifungal oils.  May require weeks of application.
  • Those caused by excessive sun exposure are the same as Age Spots discussed above.

Failed Back Syndrome/Back Pain

Suggested protocols:

Back pain many times includes the following scenario:

1) There is an injury or degeneration that leads to damage of nerve, muscle, or connecting tissue.  With the back most commonly nerve pressure or damage is involved.

2)  Pain may be accompanied by loss of feeling and/or loss of strength

3)  Inflammation compounds the pressure on the nerve

4)  As the back muscles try to compensate there are often muscle spasms or cramps in the back area that add additional pressure and intense pain.

This leads to the conclusion that the protocol should include:

1)  Oils for immediate pain relief

2)  Oils for inflammation reduction

3)  Oils to relax muscles and eliminate the spasms

4)  Oils for increased circulation to facilitate quicker healing

5)  Oils that heal and rebuild the damaged tissue


  • The single best possible step is to use the AromaTouch Technique described elsewhere on this website.  Daily if possible.  Follow with a hot compress.
  • Supplement this with the oils listed below.


Oils for immediate pain relief:

  • Deep Blue, Birch, or Wintergreen
  • Apply 2 -3 drops topically to the area where the pain is manifested as often as required or use Deep Blue Rub.  (For some Wintergreen may need to be applied with a carrier.)
  • To make the AromaTouch Technique or other oils and blends applied to the back more effective use a hot compress after the application to drive the oils deeper into the tissues and muscles.

Oils to reduce inflammation:

  • Basil, Bergamot, black Pepper, Myrrh, Roman Chamomile, Rosemary, or Wintergreen
  • Apply topically to spinal area.  This is the location on the spine where the nerve is being pinched and will probably be different that where numbness or lack of strength or even muscle cramps occur.  For example, if numbness and loss of strength is in the leg then the lower back area where the sciatic nerve originates may well be where there is nerve compression.  Two or three drops topically 2 – 3  times daily.  (For some Wintergreen may need to be applied with a carrier.)

Oils to relax muscles and eliminate spasms:

  • AromaTouch, Lime, Marjoram, Roman Chamomile
  • Apply 2 – 3 drops topically to the area where the spasm is occurring.

Oils to increase circulation:

  • Citrus Bliss, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lemon, or Peppermint
  • Apply 2 -3 drops topically to the spinal area 2 -3 times per day

Oils to heal and regenerate tissue:

  • Frankincense, Helichrysum, or Sandalwood
  • Apply 1 -2 drops topically to the spinal area 2 -3 times per day followed by a hot compress

  • Baths with oils will help relaxation
  • Diffusion of Citrus Bliss, Lavender, or other relaxing oils at bed time will help

This is a repeat of the recommendations made on the Summary page:

1. Make dietary and exercise changes in your life that make a healthy body a priority. This may take time, for some… years. But it is by far the best step you can take towards normalized blood pressure. There are many sources that can teach you foods that are best for elevated blood pressure. Take advantage of these. If you smoke or drink alcohol, stop. It’s one of the worst things you can do for elevated blood pressure. Remove high fat, fried, high fructose corn syrup products and carbonated drinks completely from your diet.

2. Exercise daily. Park a few blocks from work. Get a dog and walk it daily. Go for a walk with a son, daughter or spouse every night after dinner.

3. Use doTerra’s Life Long Vitality supplements daily.

4. Use a reduced amount of quality sea salt or whole mineral salt for seasoning foods.

5. Find essential oils that are effective at reducing high blood pressure for YOU. This will take testing, and patience. You need a BP cuff. You should have one anyway. As you try a new essential oil or blend, take your BP before and after in varying intervals. Try 5 min, 1 hr, 8 hrs and 16 hrs. Try applying oils hourly, every 8 hrs and every 24 hours. Keep a record of your results.

The following are a list of essential oils that have historically been used to help regulate high blood pressure. There are also some “blends” that some have found successful. And finally, I’ve included the blend that I personally use with success, again keeping in mind that the causes of my hypertension (adrenal) are considered rare.

Single Oils

How I Apply the Oils:

Recommended applications include several drops applied with massage to the bottom of the feet, on the wrists, along the breast bone, massage over the heart, on the carotidal arteries, and to the back of the neck. Also diffusion might be effective, and adding the oil or blend to a bath (agitating the water often).

Suggested protocols:

Protocol 1:The GX Assist and Zendocrine cleansing products both provide immediate help and long term support for this condition.  This protocol has been suggested:

Follow a 3 month protocol:

  • First month:
  • Use the GX Assist as directed on the product (3 caplets per day for 10 days) with meals.  NOTE:  This may be too strong for some (skin reactions or other discomforts as the body detoxifies.  If so reduce to 1 caplet per day for 10 days.
  • Follow this with PB Assist to rebuild probiotics.
  • Rest for the remaining 30 days.
  • Second month:
  • Use the GX Assist and PB Assist as described above (if it was necessary to reduce to 1 caplet per day try increasing to 2 or 3 if possible)
  • Rest for the remaining 30 days from the GX Assist
  • Add the Zendocrine cleanse products for the full 30 days.  Take the Zendocrine Detoxification Complex caplet once per day.  Add 5 drops of the Zendocrine blend to a capsule and take once per day.
  • Third month:
  • Repeat the second month procedures.

Protocol 2:  Ginger, Peppermint and the blend DigestZen are all helpful to sooth the digestive tract and have the antibiotic properties to help with the bacterial infection.  Typically taking 2 to 4 drops twice a day in a capsule is sufficient.  The oils can help to bring comfort from immediate pain and to reduce the infection, beyond this, for long term help an emphasis should be placed on proper diet and supplements:

  • Fiber in the diet is highly recommended
  • Life Long Vitality supplements will give a proper balance of nutrients
  • Supplemental probiotics will strengthen the digestive and immune systems


Heartburn/Gastric Reflux

•  Maggie Tisserand, Aromatherapy for Women speaks very highly of Sandalwood for heartburn during pregnancy. Her personal use was taking one drop internally. Our recommendation would be to seek professional conFirmation of such a self-help procedure.


Anxiety/ Anxiety Attack

Topical application of one of these oils to the chest and/or wrists during the day.  Some rotate the oils other find one is best.  Evenings topically apply Lavender to the bottoms of the feet for improved sleep.  For an anxiety attack use cup and inhale to get immediate relief.

Suggested protocols:

Depression seems to be an epidemic in today’s society. Essential oils can help. For mild depression Lavender, Sandalwood, andYlang Ylang among others, are effective. Also the blends Balance, Elevation, and Serenity are very effective. A special blend using Melissa is suggested by Dr. Hill:

•  2-3 drops Wild Orange

•  2-3 drops Peppermint

•  2-3 drops Melissa

Application: Diffusion is most effective, but topical application to the chest or body and foot massages or baths also offer good results. Use cup and inhale after applying topically or consider having an inhaler handy if you are on the go. Since  there are a wide variety of oils that potentially can help experiment as necessary to find out what oils offer optimum results for each individual. Some point out that if help is required over a long period of time a single oil or blend can get “boring” or less effective. For best results rotate or change oils or blends periodically.

Safety Precautions: If severe states of depression persist, the help of a qualified licensed professional is recommended.

Life Long Vitality supplements– Give the body needed nutritional balance.  Necessary for proper brain function.

The early writers on use of essential oils (Valnet, Tisserand, Gassefosse) came before our modern era where this type of disorder has become so common.  For that reason there is no information from them on the use of oils.  More recent essential oils users have documented their successes in using oils to address the symptoms often experienced by those with ADHD. Summarized below are some of their recommendations:

  • For frustration, impatience, and anger use oils and blends that calm.  Balance, Serenity, Frankincense, Lavender, Ylang Ylang.  Applying to the feet, back of the neck, behind the knees, and diffusion are all suggested.
  • For improved concentration the oil vetiver.  Again on the feet or, for school children that need help during the school day, a necklace with a pendant that will absorb the oil will make it available all day.
  • Some, with autism, are particularly sensitive to smell and may resist the use of oils.  Applying to the feet, even after they are asleep, can circumvent this problem.
  • Also go to the “Especially for Kids” tab to read the experiences of others directly.  There are good suggestions on “touch” and support (some are very moving and helpful).

The following blend was submitted by a mother that had great success with 3 children:

Peaceful Child Blend
•  18 drops Vetiver
•  10 drops Ylang Ylang
•  7 drops Frankincense
•  5 drops Clary Sage
•  3 drops Marjoram
•  12 drops Fractionated coconut oil

Blend in a roll on bottle and apply to bottoms of feet and on the brain/ spinal reflex points of the feet right after showering in the morning.

Suggested protocols:

Most often suggested for all types of diabetes is good eating habits with proper nutrition, the Life Long Vitality supplements are a must.  This should be coupled with physical activity and weight loss if you are overweight.

Essential oils protocol most often suggested is:

  • rub Balance on the feet in the morning
  • take 8-10 drops of Coriander and/or Basil in a capsule during the day
  • consider 2 drops of On Guard in the above capsule as well
  • rub Lavender on the feet at night

Other oils should be considered.  Learn to read your body and sense what you need.  Sometimes in chronic conditions like diabetes the body seems to “tire” of one particular essential oil.  That is, it losses its effectiveness over time, and you need to switch temporarily to another.


Top Ten Uses for an ED “Shot Glass”.

Strep/Sore throat

Pull (swish and pull between teeth) for up to 10 min, Spit.

Up to 5 drops of the following depending on the need ….

Peppermint, Oregano, Lemongrass, Grapefruit, Lemon, Melaleuca, Cinnamon

Pull and swish for up to 10 min, spit.



Tooth ache, Braces ache

1-2 tblspn water

2 drops On Guard

2 drops cove

1 drop Melaleuca

Pull (Swish between teeth and braces for up to 10 Min, Spit



Mouth and Gum problems

1-2 tblspn water

2 drops Myrrh

2 drops Clove

1 drop Lavender or Peppermint

Pull and swish for up to 10  min.  Spit.

Drink to stop hiccups



Brush Teeth

2 tblspn water

Rinse mouth then brush teeth, spit
